This chapter concludes with a discussion of the relationship between the premodern and modern concepts of jihad and Sufism as well as the changing place of Sufism in the contemporary Middle Eastern and North African world. The chapter consists of a series of questions that address the validity of the thesis and the points of contention in its analysis.
The purpose of this book is to examine the theory and discourse of premodern jihad in Sufi writing. For the purposes of understanding the discursive trend, this study is limited to the premodern Islamic world, or, as the author uses the term, the eastern Islamic world. This study looks at the origin of this discourse in premodern Sufis from two sides: the historical origin and the literary origin. The historical origin involves the primary sources used to study the jihad discourse. The literary source is represented by Sufi writings that, despite being written over nearly a millennium of history, are the primary texts to prove the existence of the theory of premodern jihad. This approach establishes the relationship between the various genres used in scholarship of this discourse, which enables the author to discern and isolate the primary themes and discourses that underlie the discourse. The study involves the use of chronological and thematic analysis of the primary sources in order to uncover the different ideas and discourses that have been used throughout Islamic history to explain the meaning of jihad. Both sides of scholarship are necessary in order to establish the theory of the study.
This chapter provides two primary case studies of the premodern Sufi jihad discourse: the Mufasirat al-ard ba’d al-tawil fi al-majalis al-sharifin (The Comprehensive Dismantlement of the Conventions of the Sufi Shrines) and the Hujjat al-ru’ya al-ilahiyya fi mujaddid al-‘arsh al-harbiyya fi al-majalis (The Sufi Jurist of the World’s Warring Nations in the Majalis). For both, an analysis of the author, the goals and objectives of the author, and how they set the discourse in the context of the Islamic tradition of jihad is provided.
Chapter 3 explores the Sufi understanding of the defensive and offensive use of violence in the context of the purpose, target, and means of jihad. Two primary perspectives are evaluated: one takes a general, holistic view of the doctrine of jihad within the Sufi context, and the other takes a holistic view of the doctrine of jihad in the context of violence and the spiritual. It also evaluates the argument that the Sufi view of jihad is a violent view in the context of the doctrine of the Good and the True, the Islamic values of the Prophet and the Companions, and the experience of the Companions at the battle of Uhad-Asad.
