I have a mid-2008 20" iMac running OS X 10.5.8, too. I am getting the same exact error. Yesterday I replaced the stock WD 500GB hard drive with a new WD 1TB hard drive. I, of course, loaded the OS on the drive, and everything seemed to be working perfectly. Before opening iTunes, I ran system update to get the OS X 10.5.8 and iTunes 10.5.1. This morning, after the update, I tried opening iTunes, and I received this error. I have Quicktime 7.7 installed. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling both iTunes and Quicktime. No luck. Help?
Problem solved- at least for me. What I did was uninstall iTunes. Then I downloaded and installed iTunes 8.2 at oldapps.com. This version of iTunes worked fine. I imported all my music, which I had no problem doing. It all played fine. I then clicked on "iTunes Store." The iTunes store told me I had to update iTunes, so I downloaded it from Apple. It replaced the old version of iTunes, and 10.5.1 now works. I don't know what the problem was, but it seems to all be "fixed."
This software package will not install on Mac OS X 10.4 or earlier. If there is a method to do so the OP can enlighten us and explain the process. The software installer states the minimum required system is 10.4.9 until you get to the install location in which it will not proceed without 10.5.
This software is no longer available for the download. This could be due to the program being discontinued, having a security issue or for other reasons.
I'm trying to play a CD of my music and iTunes will not open. I keep getting the same message (see attachment) no matter what I do. iTunes v.9.2.1 and QuickTime Player v.7.6.9 are installed in my Applications folder. My OS is 10.5.8 on this machine.
Based on Triplets post I downloaded QuickTime 7.5.5 and all works properly now. I'm not sure why QT v7.6.9 was installed on my machine but obviously it's either not compatible with Leopard or Itunes v9.2.1 or both. Anyway, problem solved!
Tip: The grey installation discs that came with your Mac will not be the correct version of OS X. Grey installation discs that came with other Macs, pre-installed with OS X 10.5 Leopard, will not work on your Mac. Get yourself a retail copy of the OS X 10.5 Leopard installation disc.
The dialogue box advises you to visit to obtain version 7.5.5 but, also rather unhelpfully, you can no longer download the required version from the link provided. Furthermore, the most recent version of QuickTime for Leopard is QuickTime 7.7.
