It's amazing how much better my opinion of the movie improved just a few days after I saw it. I want credit for that. It sucks but already I absolutely love it. I could say it's better than Austin Powers but only in material terms, as it lacks the creativity, inventiveness, originality and humour that Austin Powers had in abundance. It's also quite a good improvement on The Wedding Singer. Watching it again I was struck by the acting and writing, particularly the acting. Everyone in the cast, with the exception of the protags (Mike Myers and Jim Carrey), is quite good. I think I'm going to like Lee Majors more, when I check him out again.
Wedding Singer isn't as good as its near hero, but it's still funny and the story would play well elsewhere, besides the fact that I was expecting to see a rude, crude and vulgar comedy. Unlike Wong Kar-Wai's In the Mood for Love, which sticks close to its roots, Elliott's Wedding Singer is a parody of Hollywood musicals, with a lot of tongue in cheek stuff. However it's not explicitly for adults, it's a bit of a family film, and it's quite sentimental at times. Sweet, funny and sometimes quite moving, this isn't the sort of film that should appeal to every audience.
Love Guru (Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls) is still on the crappy side, but it actually ranks semi-decent with the Austin Powers movies and Shrek. One of the more enjoyable movies that I've seen this year and the most enjoyable comedy that I've seen in a while. It's that rare thing, a genuinely funny movie that's also clever and witty. At times it's both funny and surreal and it's not difficult to see why its director, Jim Varney, is an extremely popular comedian. Evelyn Rudie has a great role and Jim Carrey is excellent as the aimless and dorky detective.
I really didn't like The Love Guru. On paper it had a decent cast, but other key ingredients got lost in the equation. I will give some credit, when it comes to Mike Myers movies The Love Guru is not quite as bad as Cat in the Hat, which was a disgrace and embarrassing to watch. Myers is hit and miss for me, he was good in the Austin Powers movies and Shrek but he is awful in this and Cat in the Hat. His mugging tries to be endearing but it is actually quite irritating. The rest of the cast try but it is all a bit of a wasted effort. The Love Guru is also very silly, repetitive and predictable, with a dreadful script, poor direction and a clichd story. Overall, I didn't like it. Just for the record, I love comedy, but I disliked The Love Guru so much it's making me feel that Myers' career has well and truly gone down the plug. 1/10 Bethany Cox d2c66b5586
