Installing Cydia involves jailbreaking your device. It can be downloaded and installed on multiple iOS versions, and you can find all the links for each version listed in our dedicated Cydia Download page linked here.
We will keep this page updated with all the latest jailbreak tools and the latest jailbreak methods. To get these updates, like this page on Facebook. All updates will be posted to your Facebook timeline as soon as they are published. You can also follow the latest jailbreak discussions on the official Reddit community handle.
Jailbreaking an iPhone or iPod Touch basically involves replacing or modifying key components of Apple's iOS operating system with custom applications. As a result, it opens up your device to a number of possibilities beyond what Apple normally permits. This includes installing third-party apps, customizing the look of the phone's software, or even installing a whole new operating system entirely. However, jailbreaking a device is a complex process, but for the dedicated, it can mean they get more out of their iPhone or iPad Touch. It's not without its risks, however.
Jailbreaking your iPhone means freeing it from the limitations imposed by Apple. Although you can continue using the App Store, you can also install other apps from other stores, change the look of the operating system, and plenty more. There was a time when jailbreaking was almost essential to do any customization of your iPhone, or even to run apps in the background. However, jailbreaking has become less popular as iOS has evolved and Apple has added many of the features that were previously only available to the jailbreaking community. Still, jailbreaking can be useful to install and run apps that can't be found on the App Store, or even just as a step toward unlocking your iPhone so you can use it on another carrier.
At best, updating iOS will undo your jailbreak and you'll have to go through the whole process again. This also assumes that a jailbreak is available for the newer iOS version, which it often won't be, as it takes a while for the jailbreaking community to catch up when Apple releases a new iOS update.
Not only does Apple disapprove of jailbreaking in principle, but most of the methods used by jailbreaking tools on modern iPhone devices are actually exploiting security vulnerabilities in iOS or the underlying hardware to get into your device in the first place. This means that each time Apple releases a new iOS version, it often closes these doors, requiring the jailbreaking community to find another way to bypass Apple's security and get into the iPhone to install their own custom operating system enhancements.
Step 4: Your iOS version will be shown in the second row, beside Software Version. You can also tap on this field to see the internal build number, which could be helpful in tracking down a more specific jailbreak solution.
The iPhone XS/XR and newer models can only be jailbroken if you're running a jailbreak-compatible version of iOS, which as of now leaves out iOS 14.6 or later and all flavours of iOS 15. There are several jailbreaking tools available for these newer iPhone models, one of the most popular of which is unc0ver. Technically speaking, unc0ver only supports up to iOS 14.3 on its own, although it's possible to use it with versions up to and including iOS 14.5.1 by installing another tool known as Fugu14 alongside it.
Jailbreaking your device can be a fun way to explore a world outside of Apple's traditionally walled garden, but as you can probably see from the steps above, it's not for the faint of heart. You'll also want to watch out for many of the "fake" jailbreaking tools out there, as not every app or service that claims to "jailbreak" your device actually does so; many are merely repositories of additional apps that still have to operate under Apple's standard iOS restrictions. A true jailbreak modifies the underlying operating system so apps can do things that Apple doesn't normally permit, such as customizing your home screens, adding more powerful widgets, and running apps more freely in the background for things like call recording. As a rule, if a jailbreak tool seems too simple, or claims to support versions of iOS that the mainstream ones don't, then it's probably not offering a true jailbreak.
The new YTHoldForSpeed jailbreak tweak allows users to change the playback speed of any video they might be watching in the YouTube app by simply tapping and holding on the video in the app.
TwistNTurn is a new jailbreak tweak that aims to make using Rotation Lock more user-friendly by allowing users to more easily switch to landscape mode when the tweak detects when the user might want to do so.
Finally! Finally, we have a jailbreak tool for the latest version of Apple's iOS - the first time for 9 months and early indications are that all devices except the iPad Pro 9.7 and iPod Touch 6 are supported. That means that the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus can finally be jailbroken as well as any other device running an iOS version at or between 9.2 and 9.3.3.

The downside? Yes, sadly there's a downside yet, again, although this time there is actually a tool available that compatible devices can use to fully jailbreak. Unfortunately, the tool is what is called a 'semi-tethered' jailbreak. Traditionally, jailbreaks are in the form of 'untethered', which means that once you've installed the jailbreak tool, you can restart or switch off your device and the jailbreak will still be applied - which is what you want.
Sadly, the latest tool is semi-untethered, which means that when you restart or switch off your device (that includes running out of battery), you'll need to re-jailbreak. Thankfully, this can actually be done by just running the jailbreak app on your device - you don't need to hook it up to a PC. But still, this is far from ideal. Below you'll see my full guide on how to jailbreak. You'll then have to make up your own mind as to whether you're desperate enough to use it. For now it's Windows-only too.
Jailbreaking allows you to customize iOS in ways not made possible through iTunes. You can add more options to the control center, tweak or add animations and shortcuts and choose from thousands of exciting apps and tweaks in the Cydia jailbreak store. There are even apps that can fake your location in apps such as 'Pokémon GO' - see how to do that here:
Most jailbreak tools work fine, but it's always a good idea to backup your device in iTunes first, not least of all because you can restore your phone later after you've updated to iOS 9.3.3, which I'll be doing here. If anything goes wrong, you can just restore back to your previous backup and try again. To backup, go into iTunes, connect your device to the PC physically, right click on it under devices, and select backup.
If you haven't already, update to iOS 9.3.3, or you can try jailbreaking on any firmware above 9.2 as well. Usually, I'd recommend restoring your device as well but I jailbroke my iPhone 6 fine without doing it this time.
Once installed you'll be presented with a window that looks like the above image. First, lock your iOS device. Click on the large green box at the bottom to start installing the jailbreak - with your device connected to your Windows PC or laptop of course. If it doesn't or you're running the application for a second time you may need to click the blue icon on the programs main page when you open it.
Now, jailbreakers have reported two things happening here. Some people see a captcha and enter details to move to the next step while others are required to input their Apple ID and password. This is a standard method of sideloading applications into iOS. There have been no reported security issues here, but clearly entering your details may be something some don't want to do. You can, of course, change your password as soon as you've jailbroken your device to be on the safe side, or create a throw-away set of ID details.
Now go to Settings>Device management and click on your email address/Apple Device ID name and click trust the developer. I've whited out the addresses here but yours should list the Apple ID you used. This will allow the application to jailbreak your device.
If everything has worked as it should, Cydia should appear on your iOS device. It may take a day or two for apps and tweaks to be updated and some are reporting issues with Cydia too. I'll keep this posted updated with potential solutions.
This is an incomplete list of community-reported scam sites that pretend to distribute or sell jailbreaking and unlocking tools/services. (There are many other scam sites not listed here yet.)
If you see a site selling jailbreaking or unlocking software (or asking you to do a survey before downloading), it's a scam. (Companies make money when you fill out surveys, so they promise a jailbreak to get you to fill them out.) Scam sites may also provide free fake tools that actually install adware or other kinds of malware in order to make money from you. Some legitimate forms of unlocking are not free - third-party IMEI unlocks and SIM interposer devices both cost money - but ultrasn0w is always free.
In general, please consider: is what the site promises too good to be true? Does it promise a new jailbreak for the latest iOS version, when nobody from trusted sources (such as well-known blogs or Reddit or developers on Twitter) is talking about this new jailbreak? When a real new jailbreak gets released, huge numbers of people talk about it - so if you find something people aren't talking about, be very skeptical and check trusted sources.
With every new version of iOS, Apple makes it more difficult to jailbreak and there is usually a lag before jailbreak software catches up to the latest iOS version. Software for tethered jailbreaks is released first because untethered jailbreaking is more difficult. Jailbreak software may be different for each iOS device type (iPhone, iPad and iPod). 2b1af7f3a8
