This article draws upon the family business literature and interviews with multiple stakeholders in family businesses to build a typology of motives in family business succession planning. In doing so, it follows Max Weber's classic definition of motives as \"the complex or subjective meaning which seems to the actor himself [sic] or to the observer an adequate ground for the conduct in question\" (Weber, 1978, p. 11). At the same time, it is mindful of what C. Wright Mills (1940) called the \"vocabulary of motives,\" referring to how actors justify or defend what they do in social situations.
