A 2014 survey by the Today Show and AOL found nearly 80 percent of teen girls compare themselves to the bodies and lifestyles of celebrities on social media. Of this percentage, almost half were unhappy with their appearances because of what they saw online.
In 2019, Harry co-chaired the Met Gala whose theme was "Camp: Notes on Fashion." The inspiration for it was Sontag's seminal essay of the same name which Harry referenced in red carpet interviews. Harry's outfit was all black, with a sheer blouse and tapered pants, that played with fashion gender norms and expectations along with a single pearl earring hanging from one of his ears.
Originally published in 1964, the essay sets out to define something that even the most well-informed could describe only as "you know it when you see it." For Sontag, camp is a blend of "artifice, extravagance, playfulness, and a deadly seriousness."
