The Total War series started more than 20 years ago, with the release of Shogun: Total War in the year 2000. Since then, studio Creative Assembly has become a titan of the industry. Aside from creating a thriving Total War series, they've even dabbled in other series like the excellent Alien: Isolation and Halo Wars 2.
Since the release of Shogun: Total War, there have been a total of 15 mainline total war games, with several smaller spin-offs in the form of free-to-play and mobile games. While all of them have shone in their own way, some were simply made better than others.
While both games in Total War series have been released to middling reception, they are unique experiences to be enjoyed, especially for those looking to immerse themselves in specific scenarios. The games' main selling points are the "sagas" they tell, meaning players' interest will be dictated by their personal interest in the featured scenarios.
The first Total War game to ever release was set in Feudal Japan. Ten years later, Creative Assembly chose to revisit the setting with a triumphant result. Widely regarded as one of the best releases in the Total War series, Total War: Shogun 2 received positive reception from fans new and old alike.
