Newer Android devices (from 4.2 onwards,) lack support for USB tethering on a Mac, and rely on a combination of the built-in USB network stack and other protocols to provide that functionality. Unlike the case for older Android devices, which lack a usable open protocol for USB tethering, tethering on some newer Android devices is supported for those devices that have USB networking.2)
On a El Capitan Mac, you can install rndis_host simply by double-clicking the rndis_host kext. Alternatively, if you aren't running OS X 10.11 El Capitan or earlier, you can install it through the kext assistant that comes with Xcode.
First, you need to get your hands on the rndis_host kexts that are currently available on the Mac App Store. To do this, go to the rndis_host.pkg file by clicking on the rndis_host app that is currently in your ~/Library/Packages/ folder, or by doing the following steps:
